39 EL NOPAL (The Prickly-Pear Cactus) / “Don’t Call Me Prickly (Cactus ii)” by artist Eden Folwell
The Loteria card shows a Prickly Pear cactus which made me think of how women are sometimes called “Prickly” when they show confidence. It can be perceived as aloofness when in reality they are standing in their own strength. I painted the Prickly Pear in the background.
I decided to make the hair into a barrel cactus because I love the round shape. Hair is so soft and I show it transformed into strong spines.
There is also the succulent inside of a cactus. Like a woman, you can see the soft succulent part if you get to know her. I had to also include some pink cactus flowers which bloom on the barrel cactus.
“Don’t Call Me Prickly (Cactus iii)” is one of a series of 3 paintings of strong women.
