DEER WOMAN by artist Emily Gonzales
$ 850.00
Mixed media: Pen, chalk pastel, graphite, marker, gouache, and watercolor, 9 x 12", framed to 11.5 x 14.5"
About the piece: The Deer Woman's story often depicts her as the mortal victim of a savage rape. Her body found in the woods next to a sleeping fawn, who comforted her so she would not die alone. Her assailants went unpunished, so her wish for Justice was granted, and she was reborn as half human + half deer. She punishes men who harm women. Luring them to the woods to trample them.
I see her as a symbol of protection + a shape shifter. Watching over the many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). Granting blessings to those who carry good medicine in their hearts and seeking justice for those who have been harmed. A delicate balance of love + vengeance.
