About our featured artist:
Joe Alvarez hails from “Echo Park,” a neighborhood in Los Angeles between Downtown L.A. and Hollywood, via Sunset Blvd. Joe’s father encouraged him to draw and color at an early age. Though his father had never painted professionally, he knew how to draw and taught Joe this skill. He taught him how to do more with less.

After graduating High School, Joe began attending art school, but shortly thereafter joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He continued to draw in his spare time. After the military term he returned home to Los Angeles and continued to explore his creativity. Joe is largely a self taught painter. He is influenced by Folk Art and Traditional Mexican Votive paintings. His work is a hybrid of parody, black humor, punk, and mestizajes. He is inspired by Manual Ocampo, Egon Shiele, and Frida Kahlo.
