The Apanohuacalhuia River is the border between the world of the dead and that of the living. It is the first obstacle that souls must overcome to reach Mictlan, the Aztec underworld. It is guarded by the god Xolotl who is custodian of the sun in the daytime hours. The travelers can only cross it with the help of the dogs they cared for in life. The dogs intercede for them before the god and help them cross. Those who were mean to dogs are destined to drown, be stranded on the shore without reaching eternal rest, or be eaten by the giant Xochitonal Iguana that roams the fords of the river.

El rio Apanohuacalhuia es la frontera entre el mundo de los muertos y el de los vivos y el primer obstáculo que las almas deben sortear para alcanzar el Mictlan, es custodiado por el dios Xolotl quien fuera custodio del sol en sus horas diurnas y solo podrán atravesarlo quienes cuenten con la ayuda de los perros que cuidaron en vida para que intercedan por ellos ante el dios y los ayude a cruzar. Aquellos que fueron malos con los perros están destinados a ahogarse, quedar varados en la orilla sin alcanzar el descanso eterno o ser devorados por Xochitonal iguana gigante que vaga por los vados del rio.
