Mission Blue & Coast Iris - These two species are endemic to the San Francisco Bay area and nearby counties and both are threatened at different levels. The Mission Blue is named after the Mission district of San Francisco, where it was first collected. These tiny (1 inch) blue butterflies are federally endangered with only the mountains of San Mateo county left of its habitat and as such, protection and rehabilitation efforts are ongoing. The flower is the Iris longipetala, or Coast Iris. As its scientific name suggestions, it has long, slender petals and is listed as "at risk." It is currently in bloom till the end of the show.
