HECATE OF THE DARK MOON by artist Ulla Anobile

$ 175.00 $ 250.00

Paper mache, acrylics, silk floss, 11 1/4" tall, 11 1/2" wide

A bit about the symbols: inside the dark moon, Hecate's circle aka 'strophalos'. On her forehead: she could be found where 3 roads meet, which was also a gathering place of her followers. On her cheek, a dagger, for discernment and cutting through to the truth. By the sides of her head: her hounds which followed her on her nightly travels.
Hecate was a powerful pre-Olympian goddess who was demoted by Zeus and his gang. Consequently, she was seen increasingly negatively, with her death and sorcery aspects emphasized. Much later, women could become suspect of being witches if they were seen out at night, particularly at crossroads.
