You know the saying ‘A new broom sweeps clean’, and its follow-up: ‘But the old broom knows all the corners’.

That’s usually thought to mean ‘oh sure, those new workers are eager and energetic, but it’s the old ones who possess the skills gained from experience’.

But as I was stitching, stitching, stitching - so many stitches here! - my thoughts too made a kind of a sweep.

And I said to myself: But there are times - now! - when those new brooms and their new ideas are needed. In politics, clearly, but in other places too. We, as a society, must find new ways of looking at things: new visions leading to new solutions

That’s why I gave my new broom some congratulatory flowers, as well as sequins to help her shine. Because we need those new brooms to draw a workable a map toward a better future.

Ulla's paper mache/fiber work is inspired by such folk art forms as the mask, the doll, the totem and the altar. Her ideas come from dreams, mythology and folklore, as well as from childhood summers spent in the unspoiled Finnish countryside. Her work often emphasizes the spiritual aspect of nature. Birds and owls, both mythical and real, are among her favorite subjects. Ulla has been creating work for Cactus Gallery since 2010.
