Ideas for Avery's paintings develop through a process of brainstorming/sketching where he searches for images that give him a sense of wonder and stimulate his imagination. He is fascinated by dreams--how they are so often totally confusing and nonsensical, yet, at the same time they can seem very profound. This feeling of wonder and fascination is what he's after in his art. He likes the ambiguity. Nothing has an explicit meaning that he's conscious of. He is searching for something that resonates with the human experience on a deep level and can be interpreted in many different ways.
