When I came up with the idea for my ghost, I was thinking the ghost was paying a visit from the deep ancestral past, about which so many of us have only superficial, perhaps cliche-filled knowledge.
Yet that past forms the roots of who we are, a firm foundation allowing our true self to develop and flourish. So the visiting ghost would be able to connect us to that past, and even answer our questions, if we had the patience to listen.
But as I was working on my ghost, and as its personality began to emerge, it occurred to me that maybe the ghost would also like to ask that question. Maybe the ghost too needed to know who it was, and to come to terms with its connection to the world of the living.
Perhaps what was needed between the living and the dead was a kind of cosmic two-way street? And perhaps that connection wanted to be deepened and maintained at each end?

Ulla's paper mache/fiber work is inspired by such folk art forms as the mask, the doll, the totem and the altar. Her ideas come from dreams, mythology and folklore, as well as from childhood summers spent in the unspoiled Finnish countryside. Her work often emphasizes the spiritual aspect of nature. Birds and owls, both mythical and real, are among her favorite subjects. Ulla has been creating work for Cactus Gallery since 2010.
