WANING PANGOLIN MOON by artist Michelle Waters
Acrylic on 10" round wood panel (with slot for hanging on back)
Pangolins are the most illegally traded mammal in the world. It is estimated that more than one million pangolins have been snatched from the wild in the past decade. All pangolins are considered threatened with extinction on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and their imperiled status is due to overexploitation from both poaching for consumption of the animals and their body parts (e.g., scales) locally and from trafficking of pangolins and their scales internationally, mainly to satisfy China and Vietnam’s luxury meat and traditional medicine markets.
Michelle will be donating 25% of her portion of the sale proceeds of this piece to the IUCN SCC Pangolin Specialist Group, a network of biologists, ecologists, veterinarians, and other experts who are all actively involved in pangolin research and conservation, and working to secure a future for wild pangolins.
