About the piece: The Ladder, in many traditions, symbolizes the world axis, the cosmic tree, or a spiritual quest and its ultimate attainment. I gave my ladder the subtitle ‘The Ladder of Growth’, and made sure it had the traditional seven rungs frequently mentioned in a spiritual context.
Several of the rungs are dry cuttings from my front yard sage bushes. The rest of the wooden parts come from my ‘twig collection’: interesting pieces of wood I’ve picked up on my city walks, or sent by friends from near and far.
All the wood parts are sealed and varnished, and the flowers and leaves are treated with fabric stiffener.
