In this painting, the draping of the flag on the Don Clemente Loteria card echoes a popular image of the body of Iztaccihuatl in the arms of her lover, Popocatepetl.
According to legend, the lovers Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl were transformed by the gods into the two mountains that overlook Mexico City.
