The ocotillo stretches
its tentacles
up to the sky, a mass
of swirls and needles,
waxy green and brown
leaves curled up, towards
the sun, waiting
sometimes months before
a drop of water,
condensation,
rain or snow falls
to quench their
aching thirst
opening them up
to burst into a vibrant
sea green undulation,
blooming at its peak
in a sky-piercing
