SHIBORI by artist Jon Ching
Oil on wood, 16" x 16"
Shibori was inspired by the ornate symmetrical patterns temporarily carved into the sandy sea floor by male Japanese pufferfish. These geometrical structures are created to attract females.
Although the fish are only about 5" long, the circular formations they make measure about 7' in diameter and take 7-9 days to construct.
Shibori is a Japanese tie-dye technique which produces patterns that are strikingly similar to center of the pufferfish's sand-art.
