#42 LA CALAVERA (The Skull) by artist Miriam Martinez
Acrylic on canvas, 9” x 12"
Riddle associated with this image:Al pasar por el panteón, me encontré un calaverón.
The scroll reads: Así es mi energía. Así soy yo. Tal cual, así son mis huesos. Así es mi espíritu. (This is what my energy is like. This is me. As are my bones. As is my spirit)
Via the artist: People always ask me why I paint skulls. I think perhaps people are afraid of skulls... so besides doing it for cultural reasons I want them to understand that there is nothing wrong with calaveras. They are part of us and the minute our bones stop working we loose a great part of ourselves ... our energy, our spirit, etc. I see it in my mother as her bones weaken with the passing years and she becomes more fragile and breakable.
